What is the Naval Academy?

The United States Naval Academy was established in 1845 as a public institution. It has 4,594 undergraduate students (fall 2020), a city setting, and a campus size of 338 acres.

Also, the academic calendar is semester-based. The United States Naval Academy has ranked National Liberal Arts Colleges in the Best Colleges 2024 edition.

The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis is highly selective.  Also, the application process differs from that of many other schools. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria such as US citizenship, age, and marital status.

After meeting the requirements you must submit a preliminary application to see if you can compete for Official Candidate admission.

Applicants must also be nominated by a senator, a member of Congress, a serving naval officer, or a veteran. A medical exam, a fitness assessment, and a personal interview are also part of the Annapolis application.

Naval Academy Requirements

The average GPA at the United States Naval Academy is 4.3. GPA is required at the United States Naval Academy. This average GPA indicates that the United States Naval Academy is brutally selective.

The most competitive applicants in the world are already applying to the school in the hopes of settling in Annapolis. This means you need to be better. In general, if your GPA is less than 4.3, the United States Naval Academy may be out of reach.

However, the US Naval Academy considers the ENTIRE application – we can compensate for a low GPA with additional factors that we’ll discuss below. If your GPA is equal to or higher than 4.3, you’re in the sweet spot.

Applicants to Stanford’s Computer Science program are not required to obtain the formal endorsement of Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. That would be strange, wouldn’t it?

7. Being the child of a deceased/disabled veteran

Receiving more than one Congressional nomination will not benefit you. Regardless, applicants should apply to both of their Senators as well as their local House of Representatives members. This will increase their chances of receiving a single nomination.

At any given time, each House member and Senator has up to five constituents attending the Naval Academy. This averages out to just over one per year.

How many Naval Academy students receive Congressional nominations as opposed to Service-Connected nominations?

The majority of the 6,615 Class of 2024 applicants who received nominations—76 per cent—were nominated by members of Congress. Ten per cent were nominated by the President, six per cent by the Secretary of the Navy.

The last six per cent through ROTC programs. Only 1% of those nominated were children of deceased/disabled veterans.

Naval Academy SAT Scores

Notably, the SAT scores of applicants are also taken into account for admission to the United States Naval Academy. It is critical for students to understand that SAT scores are required in order to be considered for admission to the university.

In addition, the average SAT score of students admitted to the academy is 1350. However, those with a SAT score of 1240 or lower may be admitted to USNA in some cases. SAT scores are submitted by up to 74% of applicants to the academy for admission consideration.

The US Naval Academy is one of the most selective colleges in the country, with a low acceptance rate and high average SAT/ACT scores. However, Annapolis has a holistic admissions process that takes into account factors other than grades and test scores.

The rigour of your high school courses, not just your grades, is taken into account by the United States Naval Academy.

All candidates must complete an interview and a physical fitness test before being accepted into the academy. Furthermore, winning candidates typically show leadership potential, significant extracurricular involvement, and athletic ability.

United States Naval Academy Notable Alumni

The Naval Academy has an amazing list of notable alumni spread all over the country. Also, they were at different times and in diverse sectors. This is a list of some of them.

1. Jimmy Carter (1943 – 1946)

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, aimed to build a government that was both competent and compassionate. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

This farmer-turned-politician was determined to make a difference in a country weighed down by high energy prices, rising inflation, and boiling tensions. Despite finding it extremely difficult to keep up with the rising expectations, he did his best to restore his citizens’ faith in the government.

Furthermore, he attempted to make the United States a symbol of peace and promoted human rights as a focus of foreign policy.

2. Sunita Williams (1984 – 1987)

Sunita Lyn Williams is a former US Navy officer and astronaut from the United States. She began her career as a naval test pilot, then as a test pilot instructor, flying over 30 different aircraft and logging over 2,770 flight hours.

Sunita was chosen by NASA as an astronaut and spent 322 days in space on two missions, ranking sixth on the all-time US endurance list and second all-time as a female.

She was assigned to the International Space Station (ISS) as a member of Expeditions 14 and 15, then as a flight engineer on Expedition 32 and then as commander of Expedition 33.

Onboard the International Space Station, she set several records. She has a personal record of 50 hours and 40 minutes of total spacewalk time, which places her in the top 1% of all spacewalkers.

3. Philo Farnsworth (1924 – 1926)

Philo Taylor Farnsworth was an American inventor who created the first fully functional all-electronic picture pickup device (or video camera tube) as well as the first fully functional and complete all-electronic television system. He was also the first person to show the public the system.

Farnsworth, who invented a television system with the camera and a receiver, later commercialized it as the Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Farnsworth–Hirsch fusor, a small nuclear fusion device, was also invented by the great American inventor.

All of his contributions earned him a slew of awards and honours. Several memorials have been built in his honour, and a few streets and awards have been named after him, including The Philo Awards (annual public-access television cable competition) and ‘The Genius of Green Street.’

4. Elaine Goodman Luria. (1997 – 1999)

Goodman, Elaine Luria was born on the 15th of August, 1975. She is an American politician and Navy veteran who has served in the United States House of Representatives since 2019 as the representative for Virginia’s 2nd congressional district.

Luria’s congressional district encompasses the majority of Hampton Roads, including the entire cities of Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Poquoson, as well as parts of Norfolk and Hampton. She was a Navy officer for 20 years before running for Congress.

Luria rose to the rank of commander and spent the majority of her career on navy ships. In 2018, she defeated Republican incumbent Scott Taylor. In a rematch, she defeated Taylor to win a second term in 2020.

5. Roger Staubach (1962 – 1964)

On February 5, 1942, Roger Thomas Staubach was born. Roger was known as “Captain America,” “Roger the Dodger,” and “Captain Comeback.”

He is a former American professional football quarterback who played for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons.

He attended the United States Naval Academy, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1963, and after graduation, he served in the United States Navy, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Staubach joined Dallas in 1969 and spent his entire 11-year career with the club.

He led the team to the Super Bowl five times, four of which he started. He led the Cowboys to Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII victories. Staubach was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VI.
