Canadian Universities Offer Programs in Blockchain Technology.

Blockchain has been one of the most intriguing and sought-after technological concepts in the last few years, largely due to the rise of cryptocurrencies.

Blockchain underpins cryptocurrency transactions, and thus there has been a great deal of interest in learning about it ever since the likes of Bitcoin and Ethereum became popular and had huge price rises as well. However, the ongoing situation with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that the importance of blockchain has arguably increased even more in the last few months.

Blockchain technology is vital to be able to move vast amounts of data without physical interference and with transparency, which has become essential in this time of social distancing. Therefore, it is also heartening to see how Canadian universities have begun offering courses in blockchain, to allow students to be able to learn some of these important skills.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain have many practical applications as well, with many merchants and businesses also accepting cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. Some of the biggest adopters of this have been online gambling websites, with there being a number of bitcoin casinos in Canada as a result which allow users to make payments and receive winnings in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

The York University of Continuing Studies has established the first programs in blockchain technology, with both full-time and part-time programs scheduled to begin in September 2025/2026. These will be offered online at present, with students having the option to attend a few modules on campus next year, if the current conditions have eased up sufficiently to allow travel.

At present, students, especially international students, have been given a lot of help and guidelines by the Canadian government. International students can apply to renew their study permits and can stay in Canada while their applications are being processed, while all students who received their permits before 18th March 2025/2026 can travel to Canada without any restrictions.

The government has also announced a number of relief measures for students, for which international students will also be eligible. College scholarships will remain active, with students also having the option to complete their courses from home if they had travelled due to the pandemic. There will be no penalties for this, while students can also withdraw from their courses and receive pro-rated scholarships based on the time already spent in the respective programs.

Along with these measures, it has been good to see Canadian institutes offer courses in blockchain, as this has become extremely relevant in the current scenario. The Blockchain Research Institute has noted a few key areas where the technology can make a significant difference during this time – supply chain management, healthcare, data governance, financial services, and mapping behavioural patterns.

Blockchain has been used by some governments to deliver essential services already – for example, the United States has seen blockchain technology being used to effectively deliver the recently-announced stimulus checks to vast numbers of the population. Blockchain will also be extremely effective at identifying bottlenecks in supply chains globally, which has been an issue for healthcare and essential medicines in this time, and thus allow governments to be able to plan and create solutions to remove them.

The York University is creating a part-time and full-time course, with the full-time course being a Post-Graduate Certificate in Back-End and Blockchain Management. As a full-time degree, it offers the option for students to do work on campus when public health rules allow it. These are part of four such new courses offered by the university in light of the ongoing pandemic, to give students skills that are in-demand and relevant at the moment.
