What you need to know about the University of Education, Winneba

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) was established in September 1992 as a University College under PNDC Law 322.

On 14th May 2004 the University of Education Act, Act 672 was enacted to upgrade the status of the University College of Education of Winneba to the status of a full University.

The University College of Education of Winneba brought together seven diploma awarding colleges located in different towns under one umbrella institution.

These Colleges were the Advanced Teacher Training College, the Specialist Training College and the National Academy of Music, all at Winneba; the School of Ghana Languages, Ajumako;

the College of Special Education, Akwapim-Mampong; the Advanced Technical Training College, Kumasi; and the St. Andrews Agricultural Training College, Mampong-Ashanti.

The three sites in Winneba now referred to as the Winneba campus is the seat of the Vice-Chancellor with satellite campuses at Kumasi, Mampong, and Ajumako.

What are the three extra campuses of UEW?

  1. The College of Agriculture Education, Mampong: the Mampong campus is about 51 kilometers due north-east of Kumasi. The Faculty of Agriculture Education and the faculty of Science and Environment Education are located on this campus.
  2. The College of Languages Education, Ajumako: the faculty of languages, Akan-Nema Education, Ewe Education, and Ga-Dangme Education are situated in the Ajumako campus of the University of Education, Winneba.
  3. The College of Technology Education, Kumasi: the Kumasi campus, located about 320 kilometers away from Winneba main campus houses the College of Technology of the University Education, Winneba. The Kumasi campus is older than the University of Education, Winneba, it was established in 1966 and was originally Kumasi Technical Training Centre and was operating as a department under the Kumasi Polytechnic. After some educational reforms in 1992, the College of Technology became integrated into the University of Education Winneba in 1996. It is the only tertiary institution allowed to train technical and Vocational Education and training sector (TVET). The college awards diploma, degrees, masters, and doctoral degrees.
