General Requirements for Studying in Canada

Though admission process and requirements vary from institution to institution in Canada, where we’ll discuss the most general procedures and requirements to get admission in Canadian Universities or Colleges.

In general, please note that in order to study in Canada, the major thing to obtain is a study permit as it is popularly called, which serves as a Canadian student visa for the duration of your stay in the country. However, you do not necessarily need a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts for less than or equal to 6 months

Undergraduate Requirements

Undergraduate requirements depend on the type of institution one chooses, this is usually in form of prerequisites and assessments guiding the processes involved in a certain university or College to offer an academic degree, which varies in different ways depending on if the student is a foreigner or a permanent resident.

For admission into the undergraduate level, the student must have completed twelve years of academic education, but for the postgraduate level, it is sixteen years. Below you can find undergraduate requirements for most Canadian Tertiary Institutions.

All applicants into undergraduate programs must submit:

  • A completed application form;
  • An official high school transcript (or attested copy) (if applicable);
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (if any);
  • A detailed chronological résumé to demonstrate educational achievements, work experience, progression, community involvement, volunteer experience, and other related experience; and
  • A Letter of Intent (LOI) that clearly explains why the applicant is applying and outlines the student’s academic intentions.

Applicants who completed high school or any post-secondary study outside Canada must also submit:

  • Documentation confirming their high school completion was awarded, if not already indicated on official transcripts; and
  • Proof of English language proficiency.

Finally, it is important for you to know that the major languages used in Canada are English and French. But most of the universities offer courses in the English language. So you need to show your efficiency by means of English Language tests.

IELTS is the most widely recognized and accepted English proficiency test in Canada, however, some universities and colleges accept TOEFL. The score that you must obtain in these language tests varies from institution to institution and course of study.

Some universities even seek another medium of English language test assessment. For MBA, students may be asked for two years of work experience before being admitted to the university. In most cases, GMAT is compulsory for MBA students.

Basic things to know before applying for a Canadian student visa as international students

The Canadian Student Visa allows a wide variety of students either in an academic or vocational sector to grow within Canada’s bilingual borders. From simply learning English or French to earning a Post-Graduate Degree, student visas allow students to expand their knowledge and expertise in Canada. This allows foreign students to bring their rich culture, expansive knowledge, and varied skills to Canada’s already diverse classrooms and schools.

Boasting excellent and varied educational options with, reasonable tuition rates and living costs, a peaceful and multi-cultural community, and the possibility of applying for permanent residence. Canada is a top destination country for students seeking international experience.

Student Visa Basic Requirements

The Canadian Student visa allows foreign students to take advantage of Canada’s world-class education system. The specific requirements for the Student visa will vary depending on the selected level of study, the applicant’s educational background, and their country of citizenship.

Applicants will generally require:

  • Proof of acceptance and enrolment to an accredited academic institution in Canada;
  • Possess a valid passport/travel document, and provide proof of financial support; and
  • Ties to their home country and evidence of their intention to leave Canada at the end of their studies.
  • In addition, applicants must ensure that they are criminally and medically admissible to enter Canada and be willing to undergo a medical examination, as required.

Student Visa Entitlements

Many educational institutions offer awards, scholarships, and bursaries to international students on a competitive basis. An applicant who is granted a student visa is eligible to work on-campus throughout the school year, allowing them to earn money towards tuition, explore Canada’s diverse landscape, and gain valuable Canadian work experience.

In addition, they may be entitled to apply for an Off-Campus Work visa after 6 months. In most cases, foreign students are entitled to apply for a Post-Graduation Work visa, enabling them to remain in Canada for up to three years in some cases.

It may also be possible to have their permanent residence application processed in tandem, allowing them to work and live in Canada permanently. This is important in improving Ryerson University rankings on various lists worldwide
