The Institution was founded in 1962 as University of Ife, but was later renamed after the renowned Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory on 12th May 1987 because of his enormous contributions to education in old western Nigeria and in appreciation of the man whose brainchild was the establishment of the University.

The University is located sited on 11,861 hectares of land in Ile Ife, Osun State in old Western Nigeria. The University comprises of the central campus, student hostel, staff quarters, and a teaching and research farm.

OAU as it is fondly called now has areas mapped and occupied by many government parastatals like National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM) and The Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERD) present in the University.

Teaching in this University started in October 1962 with just 244 but it can boast of over 35000 students today. Obafemi Awolowo University was founded to meet the high educational needs of old Western Nigeria people who were mainly ethnic Yoruba.

It would be recalled that late Obafemi Awolowo who served as the first Premier of Western Region declared free and compulsory education, thus making many people from this part of Nigeria want to further their education.

The University initially started with just 5 faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Social Studies, Law, and Sciences but grown far beyond that now. Yes, the school has 13 faculties and two colleges now.

It has also advanced to postgraduate school. The school has a senate which is the highest decision-making body, a Chancellor and a Vice-Chancellor. Also, the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo is Eyitope Ogunbodede and its motto is for learning and culture.

OAU Accreditation Status

Obafemi Awolowo is one of the highly rated schools in Nigeria as such it has been accredited by the Nigerian Government since its inception.

There has been visits to the University by many accrediting bodies in Nigeria which have undergone an on-the-spot assessment of the facilities in the school and they often leave the school impressed.

Apart from this, in 1991, officials of the National University Commission visited the school to assess the facilities and other things the University had, and later accredited it after the officials said the school met the minimum standard for issuance of degree certificates.

OAU Hostels and Fees

The University provides hostel accommodation at a fee for both new and returning students. OAU fees for these hostels are charged in accommodation with tuition and are subject to change.

Applications are made to accommodation into Halls of Residence and students who cannot get them are encouraged to get accommodation off-campus.

Always check the portal of the University on www.oauife.edu.ng for the Official Release on fees to be paid in your session. Full academic fees must be paid before students are allowed into the Halls.

And students who live in these Halls must abide by the rules governing them. There is also provision for Halls for physically challenged and postgraduate students.

For postgraduate students, single rooms go for N1,000 per session and shared rooms for N750 while the University charges N90 per session for accommodation.

But all students are charged N2500 for facilities maintenance. Please note that these official fees are not fixed as they are subject to change.

OAU Ranking

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife always comes amongst the top 10 schools in Nigeria whenever Universities in Nigeria are ranked despite the yardsticks used in such rankings.

This is apparently the case because the school authority has continuously made efforts since inception to improve the course content, research, student affairs, reward of excellence, staff welfare, infrastructure, and a transparent system.

OAU, Ife is ranked as one of the most productive Universities in Nigeria because of the quality of graduates produced. For example, according to Cybermetrics Labs, OAU has been adjudged the best University in Nigeria and the fourth-best in Africa.

Cybermetrics Labs are owners of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities Initiative.

OAU Postgraduate Courses

OAU, Ife offers Post Graduate Courses in Graduate Diploma, Masters’ Degree (M.Sc.), and up to Doctor of Philosophy or Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) and are regulated by the University’s senate and the Postgraduate College Board.

To do a Master’s degree (M.Sc/MBA) program at OAU, you must possess at least a lower division class in Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 to 4.00.

Also, candidates who wish to further in Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D) must have 60% (B+) weighted average in Master’s degree coursework and a second class upper division.

OAU Grading System

At OAU, Ife Grading System is done on a scale of 5 just like that of every other university in Nigeria. The rundown is shown below:

First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)

Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)

Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)

Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50)

These grades determine what students graduate with after studying for a stipulated duration of his/her course.

OAU Admission Requirements

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife is a fully accredited degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. The admission requirement of OAU is at least 5 Credits (including English and Mathematics).

The condition is the basis for all departments, but other rules may apply as we cut across departments. All candidates MUST score at least 200 and above in JAMB.

The cut-off score required to gain admission to study the course of your choice at OAU varies from faculty to faculty. All prospective candidates must apply for Post UTME visit their portal on www.oauife.edu.ng as well as check your result there.

Both operations are done using the PIN from your scratch cards purchased at designated banks announced by the school. Scratch cards are sold for N1,000 at designated banks announced by the University.

Also, Intended Direct Entry candidates must possess OND with upper credit before they are considered for admission. All candidates who passed through JAMB must sit for the Post UTME exam before they are considered for admission to the school as well.

OAU Duration Of Studies

OAU employs the standard of the 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, which means undergraduates spend a minimum of 4 years doing a program in the University.

Also, all other courses offered at the university follow this schedule of 4 years (where a student does not have an extra semester), but there are variations in courses like Law, Engineering (which requires 5 years), and Medicine (6/7 years).

Transcripts can be ordered online at OAU without applicants stepping into the University. This is done through the ETX-NG transcript exchange platform as used by many Nigerian universities to deliver transcripts to schools where they are wanted.
