1. Take an Interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) examination: Applying for the Interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) examination is probably the most tentative way of gaining admission into any institution in Nigeria with JAMB examination.

It is actually similar to JUPEB program, but there are some differences between the two. In summary, I will explain what Interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) examination is about and how it works below.

The interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) is apparently not a new examination body in Nigeria. It has been in existence sine 1970 when it was established. It will surprise you to know that IJMB is actually a national examination body that has been approved by NUC and recognized by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It is fully certified by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) as an alternative to ‘A’ level Examination for candidates who may wish to seek for undergraduate admission into universities both in Nigeria and abroad. Surprisingly, students will not have to take JAMB examination again after this process.

How Interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) works

Below, i will explain how you can gain admission with IJMB:

The interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme runs for a period of twelve (12) calendar months, which is divided into two (2) semesters. Within this time, candidates would be lectured at their respective study centers and thereafter sit for the final examination.

When the program is eventually over, successful candidates (that is, candidates that performed very well) will secure admission into 200level in any Nigeria tertiary institution via Direct Entry.

So, instead of wasting one whole year waiting for JAMB to give you the score that you need to gain admission into your dream school, you can quickly apply for this program and be sure of gaining admission into your dream school the next year.

2. Apply for JUPEB admission: Applying for JUPEB admission is another super easy way to gaining admission into some institutions in Nigeria without JAMB. Quickly, I will explain to you what JUPEB is and how the program works.

First, i am sure that you have heard of JUPEB before. Well, if you haven’t, JUPEB is the acronym for Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. Frankly speaking, JUPEB is a new program in Nigeria because it started in 2013. That notwithstanding, the number of students applying for the program keeps increasing every year.

JUPEB is actually an advanced level program that allows you to gain admission into any JUPEB approved institution without writing JAMB UTME. What I mean is that, after the JUPEB program, you will be offered admission, directly to 200level, in any institution of your choice without writing JAMB. This is actually the most striking thing about the program. You don’t need to submit your JAMB registration number or result just to gain admission through JUPEB.

Admission requirements for JUPEB

Below are the admission requirements for JUPEB program in Nigeria:

  1. Candidates are expected to have a minimum of five (5) credit passes in at least 5 subjects (English language and Mathematics inclusive) in WAEC, NECO, GCE or NABTEC at not more than 2 sittings.
  2. Candidate must also register, sit for JUPEB Examinations and pass excellently well in in four subjects. One of the subjects must be relevant to the proposed course which the candidate wants to study in the university.
  3. Each subject is to be broken into four courses to be taken, two per semester, by the candidate. The results in all the courses are to be merged at the end of the second semester to obtain the candidate’s grade in that particular subject.

You see, students are no longer running after JAMB Form these days. With JUPEB you can gain admission without JAMB. Nonetheless, before apply for this form, make sure you do a little more research about it. Also, be sure that the your dream school actually accepts JUPEB direct entry before to proceed to apply for it.

Below are some of the universities that accept JUPEB admission in Nigeria:

  1. Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State
  2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka
  3. Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti
  4. Bowen University, Iwo
  5. University of Lagos, Akoka – Lagos
  6. Lagos State University
  7. University of Benin
  8. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife
  9. Babcock University, Ogun State
  10. Edwin Clark University
  11. Caleb University, Imota
  12. Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State
  13. Caleb University, Imota
  14. Crawford University, Igbesa
  15. Crescent University

Like We said, these are some of the universities that accept JUPEB in Nigeria currently. There are actually other universities in Nigeria that accept JUPEB so you can check that online.

3. Apply for Diploma/Pre-degree Programmes

Another way to gain admission in Nigeria into any institution without JAMB is to apply for Diploma/Pre-degree programmes. Trust me; this is another tentative way to gain admission without JAMB. However, it should be noted that not every school have something like this. Applying for Diploma/Pre-degree programmes can secure you direct entry admission into 200 level in your dream school.

Usually, Diploma runs within 1 – 3 years depending on the institution and course you applied. After the program, candidates will secure admission into 200level via Direct Entry into same university.

Accordingly, a pre-degree runs for a period of 7-12 month depending on the Institution and the program too. in which upon successful completion allows candidates to secure admission into 100level in same university.

Importance notice: While some universities will require that candidates must take JAMB examination before they run this program, some usually fix a particular score for candidates that wishes to apply for it. Thus, i enjoin you to do more research, particularly about the school you intend to attend before you apply for the program.

4. Apply for NOUN admission: One of the surest ways of gaining admission in Nigeria without JAMB is to apply for NOUN admission. NOUN is the acronym for the National Open University of Nigeria. It is a Federal Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution in Nigeria. This particular university is the first of its kind in the whole of West Africa.

It will surprise you to know that NOUN is actually one of the best 20 universities in Nigeria currently. As at 2018, the university was ranked my many search engines as the 23rd best university. Recently, it became one of the best 20 in Nigeria with about 20,000 students school there.

To gain admission into NOUN, you do not necessarily have to go through the stress of preparing for JAMB and passing with excellent scores in all your subjects. No! The process of gaining admission into the National Open University of Nigeria is totally different. More importantly, NOUN will never ask you for your JAMB result or JAMB certificate. Below are the requirements to gain admission into NOUN for undergraduates.

NOUN admission requirements for undergraduates

Below are the requirements for undergraduate students wishing studying in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN):

  • Candidates are expected to have, at least, five (5) credits in the SSCE/GCE O’Level/NECO/NABTEB in not more than two sittings. In other words, the university does not accept two sitting result.
  • Candidates should note that the “Teachers’ Grade II Certificate with a minimum of five merits or its combination with any of the certificates listed above to obtain equivalent of five credits at ‘O’ levels.
  • Candidates that wishes to gain admission into NOUN School of Law, must have up to five (5) credits, which must include the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English at not more than two (2) sittings.

You see, gaining admission into National Open University of Nigeria does not require JAMB as an undergraduate student. I enjoin you to do more research about NOUN before applying. If possible check whether your dream course if offered in the university.

5. Apply for admission in a private university: Do you know there are private universities in Nigeria that don’t require JAMB to gain admission into? Yes! My dear, you can gain admission into some private universities in Nigeria without JAMB.

Last year (2019), a friend of mine who wrote JAMB for about 4 times eventually got admitted without JAMB into a private university in Nigeria. It was like a miracle for the both of us. In fact, he cried and told me that if he had known, he would have gone for a private university immediately he finished secondary school.

The truth is that many students don’t know that it is actually possible to gain admission into Nigeria without JAMB. Some say that private universities are too expensive. Well, i partially agree with that because, some private universities in Nigeria are not really as expensive as people say they are.

If you really want to gain admission into any institution in Nigeria, consider applying for admission in a private university. Trust me; it has worked for many students I know.

Below are some of the private universities you should consider applying for admission:

  1. Babcook university
  2. Madonna University
  3. Crawford University
  4. Bingham University
  5. Carital University
  6. Bowen University

6. JAMB DIRECT ENTRY: This method of admission is only available to students who have earned their Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or who have graduated from a polytechnic with an HND or ND (National Diploma). Students who possess any of these certificates are eligible to apply through JAMB Direct Entry and, if they perform exceptionally well, get admitted to any institution of their choice to study any course.

Alternatives To Gaining Admission Into A University Without JAMB

Pros

a. Students admitted through JAMB Direct Entry would be admitted immediately to the 200 level, rather than starting from scratch as a fresher.

b. Only registration is necessary for Direct Entry; the JAMB Exam is not.

c. You already have a degree, so you can fall back on it if things don’t go as planned. Additionally, having a bird in the hand is better than having a million in the bush.

Cons

a. While you won’t be sitting for the JAMB exam, some universities conduct Post UTME for DE students.

b. You must have earned your BSc or ND from an accredited institution of higher learning.

c. Some courses require you to graduate with a specific CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) before you can be considered for admission.

7. NABTEB A Level: Another alternative to get into a Nigerian university without using JAMB is through the National Business and Technical Examinations Board’s (NABTEB) A” Level programme. IJMB and JUPEB are pretty comparable to this programme. The Nabteb A’level certificate and results are very different from the Nabteb O’level certificate. A’ Level Nabteb is an abbreviation for Advanced Level Nabteb. The main objective of this program is to accommodate students who seek to gain admission into their preferred university but are unable to do so through JAMB.

Alternative Solutions To University Admissions Without JAMB

Most students are unaware of this programme, thus the few that are aware of it usually gain admission through this route. Like any other A’ Level examination, it allows students to secure admission to the University’s 200 Level via Direct Entry. After completing the NABTEB Advanced Level programme, which lasts for two semesters, successful students are directly admitted into the 200 level of the tertiary institution.

Candidates seeking admission to the NABTEB A’LEVEL programme must have a minimum of 5 credits in appropriate O’level subjects from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB in no more than two sittings. For the NABTEB A’LEVEL programme, applicants who are awaiting results are also eligible for application. The approved NABTEB A’LEVEL syllabus guides lectures on the NABTEB A’LEVEL programme, and the contents of the NABTEB A’LEVEL syllabus cover University 100 level syllabus and above, which must be taught over the course of two semesters. The entire NABTEB A’LEVEL examination process is moderated by the NABTEB A’LEVEL headquarters, Benin, in collaboration with JAMB-approved moderators at accredited NABTEB A’LEVEL institutions.

Pros

a. Through this route, students would be directly admitted straight to the 200 level of their preferred University

b. For students who sign up for this programme, JAMB is not a requirement to gain admission.

Cons

a. This route of admission is quite pricey, and unless you perform exceptionally well throughout your semester, admittance is not guaranteed.

b. Whilst you might not be taking the JAMB exam, the governing body of the program will arrange an exam for its students at the end of the day.

8. Part-Time/Weekend/Evening Programmes

This is yet another approach you might take to get admitted without using JAMB. The majority of universities offer part-time programmes for students who might be interested; with part-time, there is no requirement to take the JAMB; all you need to do is pick up the application form while the sale is on and submit it to the university if the course you want is offered.

Which university can I gain admission without JAMB

Part-time courses in Nigerian universities are developed for students who are unable to enrol in full-time studies due to the nature of their work or other commitments. This programme has been designed in such a way that students who join part-time programmes will spend a little more years than students who enlist in full-time programmes. This is because there are less hours of class per week as compared to full-time students.

Similarly, nearly all polytechnics offer evening and weekend programmes. Some polytechnics offer what is known as a Daily Part-time Programme (DPT). In the same manner as those who were admitted through JAMB, those who register for these programmes would receive their National Diploma certificate after two to three years. If you decide not to pursue your HND at the polytechnic, you can use the National Diploma certificate you earned to apply for direct entrance admission into the 200 level at any institution of your choice.

Can I apply for Direct entry without JAMB

Pros

To be admitted into the part-time programme, a student does not have to take the JAMB.

Compared to JUPEB, IJMB, and other direct entry programmes, this program is less expensive.

Less time is spent in class each week, usually in the evening, allowing you to participate in other activities during the day.

Cons

In comparison to full-time students, part-timers’ academic duration is longer

Not all courses can be taken part-time; for example, professional courses in nursing, medicine, surgery, and pharmacy cannot be taken part-time.

Not all universities are accredited to offer part-time programmes.
