Recently, education in Nigeria is no longer affordable due to the increase in school fees by federal universities, making it impossible for prospective students to attend these schools due to the nature of the economy in the country. However, there are still a few universities with affordable school fees which will be mentioned in this article, so all hope is not lost for prospective students.

Here is a list of 10 universities in Nigeria with less school fees:

1. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)

ABU is a federal university located in Zaria, Kaduna State. It was founded on 4th October 1962, as the University of Northern Nigeria.

The university has two campuses, Samaru (main) and Kongo in Zaria. There is also a pre-degree School owned by the university, located in Funtua, a few kilometres away from the main campus.

The Samaru campus houses the administrative offices, faculties of; sciences, social sciences, medical sciences, arts and languages, environmental design, education, engineering, agricultural sciences, and research facilities.

The Kongo campus houses the faculties of Law and Administration.

The Faculty of Administration consists of Accounting, Business Administration, Local Government, and Development Studies and Public Administration Departments.

In addition, the university is responsible for a wide range of other institutions and programs at other locations.

School Fees: N14,000 – N45,000

2. University of Ibadan (UI)

UI is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria. It is located 8kilometres from the center of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria.

Besides the College of Medicine, the university now has eleven other faculties: Arts, Science, Agriculture and Forestry, Education, Social Sciences, Technology, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Law, and Dentistry.

The University has residential and sports facilities for staff and students on campus, as well as separate botanical and zoological gardens.

School Fees: N16,000 – N39,000

3. The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB)

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was founded on 1st January 1988. FUNAAB is one of the three universities of agriculture in Nigeria, the others being in Makurdi, Benue State and Umudike, Abia State.

The university began at its mini-campus in Isle-Igbein in the heart of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

In December 1997, it moved to its permanent site located next to the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority on the Abeokuta-Ibadan road in the North Eastern end of the city, I5km from Abeokuta City Centre.

School Fees: N18,000 – N42,000

4. Bayero University, Kano (BUK)

BUK is a federal university located in Kano, Kano State. It was established in 1977, and then it was renamed from Bayero University College and upgraded from university college to university.

The University has Faculties of Agriculture, Arts and Islamic Studies, Education, Pharmacy, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, Earth, and Environmental Studies, Social, Management Science and the recent Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology.

It has various Research Centers including the Center for Dryland Agriculture, Center for Biotechnology Research, Center for Renewable Energy and Center for the Study of Nigerian Languages, etc.

School Fees: N24,000 – N60,000

5. University of Calabar (UNICAL)

UNICAL is one of Nigeria’s second generation federal universities located in Calabar, Cross River State. it was a campus of the University of Nigeria until 1975.

The male students are identified as Malabites, while the female students are Malabresses. The male hostel is called Malabo.

This was as a result of challenges faced by the students at a time which coincided with the suffering experienced in Malabo by Nigerian deportees from Equatorial Guinea (whose capital is Malabo) at the time.

School Fees: N31,000 – N43,000

6. University of Abuja, Gwagwalada (UNIABUJA)

UNIABUJA was founded on 1st January 1988 as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes.

The Faculty of Law, the pride of the University of Abuja, is known for having one of the most organized Student Representative Councils (LAWSAN) in Nigeria.

The university has campuses in Gwagwalada, Abuja and a permanent site covering about 11,824 hectares situated along the Kaduna, Lokoja-Abuja Road.

The Permanent site houses the Faculties of Arts, Science, Management Science Veterinary medicine, Agriculture and Engineering with the College of medicine and contains the university senate and other administrative buildings.

The mini campus is still the temporary location to the Faculties of education social science, and law.

School Fees: N39,000 – N43,000

7. Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUSOK)

Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, formerly the Unversity of Sokoto is one of the first twelve federal universities in Nigeria founded in 1975. The school is named after Usman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.

The main campus is home to administrative offices, sciences, agriculture, social sciences, arts and languages, education, and research facilities.

The city campus houses the college of health sciences and the school of veterinary medicine. A third site hosts the modern university teaching hospital.

A fourth site was built during the last administration of Bafarawa of Sokoto State under the leadership of Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa.

This site houses the School of Matriculation Studies where students opting for the Remedial Studies are admitted and taught before enrollment in the university.

School Fees: N24,000 – N54,000

8. National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

NOUN is a Federal Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution, the first of its kind in the West African sub-region. It is the largest tertiary institution in Nigeria in terms of student numbers.

The University offers over 50 programmes and 750 courses but does not provide lectures to students in normal classrooms except some certain study centres, mainly due to restrictions known to the University alone and the challenges usually faced by a developing tertiary institution.

The study centre in Lagos, for instance, provides lectures to all its Law undergraduates and supplies necessary course materials to all students after the payment of tuition fees.

All courses offered have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

School Fees: N18,000 – N36,000

9. Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina (FUDMA)

FUDMA was built during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and it is situated in Katsina State.

The University has eight facilities: Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences and School of General and Preliminary Studies.

School Fees: N50,000 – N64,000

10. University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT)

UNIPORT was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, and became a University in 1977. The University has ten (10) faculties which include the Faculty of Humanities.

Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Agriculture.

School Fees: N92,000 – N128,000.
