This article has dealt comprehensively with the question: what is the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) All About? This body, popularly known with its acronym JAMB, is one of the most popular government parastatals in Nigeria.

And it is responsible for handling virtually all admissions procedures into the various categories of higher institutions in the country especially universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Brief History of JAMB

Federal Universities in Nigeria as at 1974 were seven altogether. Each of the institutions was responsible for conducting its admissions and matriculation programs. As it were, the system admission exposed many limitations and was equally responsible for waste of resources most especially for those seeking admission.

The system was considered to be highly untidy and inconsistent by the vice-chancellors. These problems became worse with the establishment of additional six universities in 1976. As a result, the government had to come up a national committee on university entrance and the committee was chaired by Mr. Angulu.

The Committee was precisely saddled with the responsibility of establishing a Joint Matriculation Board. It had come up with the recommendation that two bodies be set up to that effect viz-a-viz, the Central Admissions Board, and the Joint Matriculation Board.

The government having given credence to some of the recommendations set up the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. As at August 1988, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had come up to authorize the Board to conduct matriculation examinations for entrance into polytechnics and colleges of education within the country.

Beginning from then, The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been responsible for admissions and matriculation programs into the country’s main tertiary institutions as well as privately owned ones.

Recently, it has also assumed the responsibility of conducting promotional and recruitment examinations for the various military and paramilitary bodies in Nigeria.

JAMB is headed by a registrar and the office is currently occupied by Prof. Is-Haq Olanrewaju Oloyede.

The admission process, especially in a place like Nigeria is a very complex and tedious exercise. This is so due to, primarily, the population of the country which has reflected in the high volume of students and intended students within the country. 

So as to better handle the admissions and matriculation processes, JAMB had to permit other bodies to assist it in carrying out its tasks. These tasks centre around registrations and related issues.

The bodies are recognised simply as CBT centres. These are the only authorised agencies, except JAMB itself, capable of conducting JAMB registrations and to handle issues which are associated with the process.

Other partners such as commercial banks, microfinance banks and other quasi-financial institutions are responsible for participating in the financial dealings of the body such as the selling of the JAMB form/e-pin.

Other partners include the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Servicom Nigeria, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

So, how does JAMB conduct its admission and matriculation processes? Basically, before one qualifies to study in any JAMB-recognised institution, one has to register for, and write its examination. 

The JAMB examinations is known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This examination is conducted annually and the result are also accorded annual validity. As such, the result obtained from the exams in a particular year cannot be useful in another year.

In the process of registering for the examinations, candidates are required to fill in their preferred institutions and courses of study. This would determine the candidates’ subjects combinations for the exams. Candidates are given a choice of only four subjects related to their choice of course(s).

With the exams being targetted at meeting the UTME requirement of gaining admission, there are certain score criteria that candidates are expected to meet. Thes are mainly regarded as JAMB cut-off mark.

JAMB Cut-off Marks

For JAMB, the cut-off mark required before proceeding to the next stage of the admission process depends on the choice of institution or the type of institution. There is JAMB cut-off mark for Federal Universities, State Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Private Universities, among others.

These cut-off marks are not static or permanent. Consequently, there is a regular review process especially when institutions demand so. However, to meet the JAMB cut-off mark for universities, candidates are expected to score at least 180 in the UTME.

Anything below that disqualifies from getting admitted into federal universities. Nonetheless, with a score below that, candidates could still apply for, and be admitted into other categories of institutions.

What is The Post UTME

With the UTME sat for, candidates are then required to proceed to the Post UTME. The Post UTME exercise is traditionally a joint process between JAMB and the various institutions. Joint in the sense that JAMB sets the criteria for candidates to participate in it while the institutions carry out the screening process.

Post-UTME s therefore the admission protocol which comes after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations. Currently, while some institutions only screen the candidates’ crednetials and documents so as to ascertain their qualification for admissions, others conduct tests in addition to the screenings.

These tests are usually known as the Aptitude Test. Different institutions have different score criteria for this test, and so do their respective departments.

The Process of Admission

When all these have been done, the giving of admission is still completely the duty of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. Candidates who applied for the various institutions and went through the required processes would have to wait for JAMB to decide if they are admitted or not. 

JAMB has also made it possible for candidates to Change institutions and also effect change of courses if one fails to meet the requirement of the originally applied institution or course. This process comes with certain charges.

With all the laid down requirements met such as the UTME, Post-UTME, JAMB refers candidates to its CAPS portal so as to learn of their admission status. It is through the JAMB CAPS that candidates would get to accept or reject admission to study a particular course or in a particular institution.

Other Relevant Information About JAMB

Aside the above information bothering on admissions, JAMB is equally responsible for other exercises such as deciding the qualification of graduates to participate in the National Youth Service Corps program. As such, anyone who might have gone ahead to study in an institution without JAMB granting or accepting such admission, such a person is thereby disqualified from serving under the NYSC.
