Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology

Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology (RIVCOHSMAT) is a public higher education institution in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

It was established under the College of Health Science and Technology Law (2001). It consists of the School of Health Technology, School of Public Health Nursing, School of Nursing and School of Midwifery.

The mission of the College is to train well equipped middle-level health practitioners to meet the growing health and environmental needs of Rivers State and the nation at large.

History of RSCHST

The College was established through a bill passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly and signed into law on the 17th of August 2001 by the then Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Dr Peter Odili.

The enabling law thus brings under one administrative umbrella the long-existing Schools of Health Technology, Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing. These schools have existed for over twenty (20) years.

The School of Health Technology was established in 1974 to train low and middle-level manpower for the health sector.

The courses listed below are available for application for the 2025 academic session:

– School of Environmental Health

1. Environmental Health Technicians (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Four (4) credits and two passes in GCE/WAEC/NECO examination. The Credits must be in any of the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science, at not more than two sittings,
  • Holders of Environmental Health Assistant certificate with two years post qualification experience may be admitted at 200 level of Environmental Health Technician programme provided they fulfil the entry requirement above.

2. Health Promotion and Education (Diploma) 2 years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) credit passes in GCE/SSCE/NECO or Teachers Grade it Certificate, must include English Language, Biology and three science subjects including Chemistry, Health Science, Nutrition, Physics, General Science or Integrated Sciences.

– School of Community Health

1. Community Health Extension Workers Programme (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) O level credits in English language, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and Chemistry and any other credit in Agric, Economics, Geography, Literature and Commerce at WASC/NECO/GCE O’ level at not more than two sittings.

2. Junior Community Health Extension Workers Programme (Certificate) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Three (3) Credit in WASC/NECO/GCE. The subject should include English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and any other two passes at not more than two sittings.

3. Emergency Medical Technician (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) Credit passes in WASC/NECO/SSCE or GCE. Subjects include English Language, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at not more than two sittings.

4. Dispensing Opticianry Technician Programme (Diploma) 3 years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) Credit in WASC/NECO/SSCE or GCE. Subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics at not more than two sittings.

– School of Pharmacy Technician

1. Pharmacy Technician Programme (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) O’ level credits in WASC/GCE/NECO which must include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at not more than two sittings.

– School of Medical Social Work

1. Medical Social Work (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) O’ level credit in WASC/GCE or NECO which must include English Language, Mathematics and three (3) other subjects chosen from each of the under listed subject groupings
  • (Government/History/Civil Education, Christian Religious/Islamic Knowledge)
  • (Health Science/Biology)
  • (Economics/Commerce/Geography) at no more than 2 sittings.

– School of Dental Health Science

1. Dental Surgery Technician/Dental Health Technician Programme (Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Four (4) credits in WASC/GCE or NECO which must include Chemistry/Physics, Biology or Health Science, English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

2. Anesthetic Technician Programm (Certificate) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Four (4) Credit passes in WASC/NECO/SSCE or GCE Subject include Mathematics, Physics, Biology/Chemistry and English Language at not more than two sittings.

– School of Health Information Management

1. Health Information Management (Professional Diploma) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) credits in WASC/GCE or NECO examinations at not more than two sittings. The credits must be in Mathematics, English Language, Biology/Health Science, and other two credits from any of the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Commerce, Economics, Government etc.

2. Health Information Management (Abridgement) 1year

Entry requirement:

  • National Certificate in Information management (NCIM) in addition to possession of entry requirement for Health Information Management.

3. Hospital/Health Administration (Diploma) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Four (4) O’ level Credits in WASC/GCE/SSCE in Mathematics, English Language Economics/Government and Biology at not more than two sittings.

– School of Medical Laboratory Science

1. Medical Laboratory Technician Programme (Certificate) 3years

Entry requirement:

  • Fives (5) credits in WASC/GCE or NECO which must include: Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Physics and Mathematics at not more than two sittings and must be obtained within a space of 10 years prior to enrollment or NABTEB certificate.

2. Medical Laboratory Technician Programme (Abridgment) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Holders of Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate in addition to the above requirement should apply.

– School of Public Health

1. Public Health Nursing (HND) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) O’ level credit in WASC/GCE/SSCE, which must include English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics at not more than two sittings. In addition, candidates must possess any of the under-listed:

    Nigerian Registered Nurse Certificate (or Accident and Emergency Certificate (for males) etc plus one-year post qualification experience.

2. Public Health Nursing Abridgement (Refresher) programme (HND) 1year

Entry requirement:

  • National Diploma in Public Health Nursing in addition to five credits in English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and a pass in Mathematics in WASC/NECO/GCE.

3. Public Health (Diploma) 2years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) credits in WASC/GCE/SSCE/NECO which must include: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology/Health Science at not more than two sittings.

– School of Biomedical Engineering Technology

1. Biomedical Engineering Technician Programme (Diploma)3years

Entry requirement:

  • Five (5) O’ Level Credits in WASC/GCE/SSCE in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry or NABTEB certificate.
